Background & Tips:
An insect waterer is a useful device to help the small beneficial creatures in your garden. Like all living things, insects also need water to drink. The water also has another use for the small creatures: some insects, such as wasps, need the water to build their nests. They scrape plant fibers off old pieces of wood and process them into a pulp with their saliva. The walls of their homes are built from this pulp.
Bees, in turn, collect water and bring it to their nest. There, the evaporation of the water ensures that the temperature and humidity are balanced. All insects look for water sources to drink from - these can be puddles or ponds. Sometimes they sit on plants such as water lilies to get to the water. If they cannot find a suitable place to sit, the insects can drown in water that is too deep for them.
Hot, dry summers are a problem. During this time, the puddles dry out and it becomes increasingly difficult for insects to find water. You can support these little beneficial creatures with an insect waterer.
There are different ways to design your insect waterer:
1. Insect waterer with natural materials: You can find materials in the garden to fill the waterer for insects. Your bowl made of glazed clay, glass or another sturdy material serves as the basis. Stones of different sizes are placed in the bowl - they can be placed next to each other or on top of each other. Other natural materials such as pieces of wood, moss and small plants can also be placed in the waterer. This not only creates a beautiful picture, but also helps the insects to land and hide if necessary. Finally, water is put in the bowl - it is important that most of the stones and natural materials are sticking out of the water.
2. Insect waterer with glass marbles: A simple and quick option is an insect waterer with glass marbles. Your waterproof and sturdy bowl is used here too. You put glass marbles of different sizes in the bowl - the color doesn't matter. Then you fill the bowl with enough water so that the marbles still stick out. The insects can land on these and drink from the water.
